Drive Medical Nitro Rollator – Brake Replacement Guide

This guide shows how to change a brake and brake cable on all Drive Medical Nitro rollators. There are two methods. The first uses a 5 ft cord to pull the new cable through the frame; the second uses long needle-nose pliers. The steps for installing the new cable into the brake handle are the same for both methods.

Tools Required

• 4 mm Allen wrench
• Phillips screwdriver
• Flat-head screwdriver
• 5 ft (1.5 m) cord or long needle-nose pliers
• Duct or electrical tape (for Method 1)

Method 1 – Using a Cord

1. Remove the crimp fitting at the end of the brake cable.
2. Loosen the cable fastener with a 4 mm Allen wrench and remove it.

3. Remove the brake cable from the cable adjuster and spring.
4. Remove the cable from all cable guides along the frame.

5. Tape a 5 ft length of cord to as much of the brake cable as possible. Do not tape the cord to the cable housing and do not let the taped section become wider than the housing.

6. Twist the hand grip back and forth and pull it off the handlebar.
7. Remove the screw that holds the brake handle to the handlebar with a Phillips screwdriver. Slide the brake handle off. Newer Nitro models have a cable-guide sleeve between the hand-brake assembly and the push handle.
8. Remove the three screws holding the handlebar housing to the frame. Separate the two halves of the housing and remove them from the handlebar.
9. Pull up on the cable and guide it through the hole in the lower frame until the cable and cord are out of the frame. Make sure the cord does not get pulled inside the frame.
10. Remove the cord from the old brake. Install the new brake cable into the brake handle (see section Installing the New Brake Cable in the Brake Handle below), then tape the cord to the cable of the new brake cable. Again, do not tape the housing and do not make the taped area wider than the housing.
11. Pull the cord until the new brake cable comes out of the bottom of the frame.
12. Re-attach the handlebar housing to the frame. The largest of the three screws goes in the center hole.
13. Slide the brake handle onto the housing. As you slide it forward, pull on the brake cable coming out of the lower frame. Secure the brake handle with its screw.
14. Slide the hand grip back onto the handlebar.
15. Route the brake cable through the two lower cable guides.
16. Pass the brake cable through the cable adjuster and spring.
17. Slide the cable fastener onto the cable and position it so the brake blade sits about 1/8" (3 mm) from the wheel.
18. Tighten the cable fastener.
19. Push any extra brake cable back into the hole in the lower frame, and use the cable adjuster to fine-tune the brake. If the brake still does not engage the wheel, loosen the cable fastener and reposition the cable.

Method 2 – Using Long Needle-Nose Pliers

1. Remove the crimp fitting at the end of the brake cable.
2. Loosen the cable fastener with a 4 mm Allen wrench and remove it.
3. Remove the brake cable from the cable adjuster and spring.
4. Remove the cable from all cable guides.
5. Twist and remove the hand grip from the handlebar.
6. Remove the screw that holds the brake handle to the handlebar and slide the handle off. Newer Nitro models have a cable-guide sleeve between the hand brake assembly and the push handle.
7. Remove the three screws that hold the handlebar housing to the frame. Separate the two halves and remove them.
8. Push the new brake cable down inside the frame until you can see it through the cable hole in the bottom of the frame.
9. Use long needle-nose pliers to grab the cable through the hole and pull it fully out of the frame.
10. Re-attach the handlebar housing (largest screw in the center hole).
11. Slide the brake handle onto the housing while pulling on the cable coming out of the lower frame, then tighten the handle screw.
12. Slide the hand grip back onto the handlebar.
13. Route the cable through the two lower guides.
14. Pass the cable through the adjuster and spring.
15. Position and tighten the cable fastener so the brake blade is about 1/8" from the wheel.
16. Push any extra cable into the frame and fine-tune with the adjuster.

Installing the New Brake Cable in the Brake Handle

1. Pull the brake handle away from the body of the assembly. This pulls the cable out through the bottom cable hole and out of the cable-guide sleeve (on newer units that have one).
2. Remove the old cable from the handle. Push out the plastic dowel so the round cable guide can be removed.
3. Remove the new cable from its sleeve.
4. Slide the cable through the housing hole with the slot, then place the cap over the slot.
5. Slide the cable through the bottom hole in the housing and through the cable-guide sleeve (if present).
6. Wrap the cable around the round cable guide and slide the guide into the handle. Make sure the cable sits in the same position it had when it came through the slotted hole.
7. Use a flat-head screwdriver to push the cable guide fully into the housing and line up its hole with the holes in the handle.
8. Insert the plastic dowel through the aligned holes.
9. Slide the handle back into the housing while pulling the cable to keep it snug.
10. Slide the cable into the cable guide (if used) and then into the outer cable sleeve.

After the cable is installed and adjusted, test both brakes several times before using the rollator.
